¡Bienvenidos!

Hello and welcome back to our little dot in the online world! It has been a long time since we have updated our website. There is really not too much for us to catch you up on though, we’ve just been busy working away out here in the desert. Oh! And we got engaged!!! Right, you probably knew that already, that’s why you’re here! But there are probably a few things the little birds left out, so we are happily sharing all sorts of stories and information on our re-invented, ground-breaking, award-winning website, October-wedding edition, for your reading pleasure…

Life in the Desert

Just in case anyone was wondering what we were up to these days (aside from planning a wedding), we are doing pretty well out here in Palm Desert. Adjusting to the summer daily temperatures of 110 degrees has been, well, an adjustment, but now that our air conditioning is fixed things are looking much cooler. Martin is busy working for Top Stoneworks, a company that does installation of marble and tile in custom homes. He is learning a lot, and gets to watch some amazingly big and expensive houses being built. Grace is working for Alaska Airlines, as a customer service agent at the Palm Springs Airport. While not an ultimate career goal, it’s a fun job for now with some great benefits! She was also working as an event planner for the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert, but after a lot of thought, recently quit that to return to working with autistic children, and possibly start a masters program (in special education) in the fall. We still go back to San Clemente whenever we get the chance to visit our friends and family, and take a break from the heat. If only Argentina was also just a 2-hour drive from here, things would be great!

The Story of Engagement (written by Grace)

I don’t think anyone was as surprised as I was that Martin proposed when he did. He is good at keeping secrets. And he is also very good at knowing the exact thing to cheer me up (granted, I suppose diamond rings usually cheer people up, but that’s actually not what I mean).

First, a little bit of a back-story…the month of December, for me, was just crazy. I had just started working for Alaska Airlines, which meant I had to spend 3 weeks in Seattle for training. I would fly up Sunday afternoon, and fly back for the weekend on Friday night. Those weekend days (along with many nights in Seattle) were spent catching up on all my museum work – including planning one of the biggest events, the annual Breakfast With Santa Program (200 people, breakfast, dance performance, art projects and of course, Santa). So the days leading up until Christmas were a complete blur. I spent less than 24 hours in San Clemente with our families for Christmas, and then it was back to the desert to run the museum’s Winter Camp program (40 kids from 8am-5pm, arts & crafts, games, snacks etc.), in between working the holiday rush at the airport.

So on New Years Eve, my last camp kid gets picked up at 5:30 pm, and I wearily start thinking about how I have to be at the airport at 5:30 am the next morning. (Martin and I had agreed that he would go to San Diego to spend New Years Eve with friends there, so at least one of us could celebrate the holiday.) Martin picked me up at the museum all dressed up to go out, and I’m in jeans and a sweatshirt covered in chocolate frosting and paint. I get tears in my eyes thinking about how every year for the past 7 years we have hosted a New Years Party with our friends. Then, Martin says, “I made us some New Years plans.” At first, I was a little confused, but then just happy to know that at least I wouldn’t be alone. When we got home, he told me to get dressed quickly, so I rush around finding some non-frosting covered clothes and putting on a little make-up. I dash back into the living room all ready, and Martin is sitting on the couch. He asks me to come sit with him, which is also confusing because he had just told me to get ready to go quickly, and now we are just sitting on the couch). We talked about what an amazing year we had, traveling in South America then moving to the desert – how many challenges there were and how much fun we had together. Then Martin pulls out a ring from his shirt pocket and asked me to marry him.

You thought that was the best part right? So did I! But it gets better!!! After lots of hugs and kisses and “of course” and “really?” and “yes really” Martin says, “Ok lets go celebrate, we just have to drop off something at my parents house first.” In the car driving there, I run through the list of people I need to call, but Martin says, (to everyone on my list), “they already know.” I wonder how this could be as we walk up to his parent’s door, and as I step inside, I see all of our friends – champagne glasses in hand. Martin threw a “surprise engagement/new years party” which was, as I said earlier, exactly what I needed to cheer up. It was so meaningful to me that he had gone to all the trouble to plan this for me, and that our friends had come all the way out to celebrate with us, that I still get tears in my eyes thinking about it. So we had a wonderful New Years Party, and waking up to work at the airport at 5:30am the next morning wasn’t nearly as difficult as I had imagined.

This is from our family engagement celebration a couple of week into the new year.

Meet the Wedding Party

A quick introduction to those fancy folks standing with us during the ceremony...

Bridesmaids

Annie - The younger-yet-taller Sister of the Bride! Known to many as “Shman” is often seen wearing hip-waders and a baseball cap as she counts, measures and tests various life-forms in Morro Bay, California. Annie is an “ecologist and systematic biologist” and it took us years to remember those words. What is easier to remember is that Annie loves all things natural. She kayaks, hikes, shops at the farmers market and works to make sure that our water is clean and our underwater grass is accounted for (check out www.mbnep.org). She is also one of the funniest people we know, and although at times she is one tough-cookie she is the most caring girl in the world.

Laura - the older-and-just-as-tall sister of Martin. Although Laura likes hikes in Mammoth and on the beach, she loves a cool drink poolside. But she hasn’t had much time for that lately, as she is busy starting up her own business (www.landlprocessing.com) processing loans. Last year we both took part in her wedding to Luke in Newport Beach.

Katie - Martin was the first to meet Katie at UCLA when she had her radio show (with Veronica) right before his. Katie, Grace and Veronica spent many late evenings in the tiny radio station watching Josh and Martin do their show (often half-clothed) resulting in a great friendship, and later roommate-ship. Katie now works for JD Powers and Associates doing marketing research. In her free time she runs marathons, cooks, and keeps up with the LA music scene with some help from Veronica and Scott. She loves dinosaurs, sandwiches and visible dj’s. We are very lucky that she is also a talented gardener (wait until you see our table centerpieces at the wedding!)

Groomsmen

Spencer - Martin and Spencer's friendship goes back to the 7th grade ar Our Lady of Fatima, when they used to ride bike to each other's houses and play hours of video games. Grace and Spencer's friendship goes back to 11th grade AP Chemistry, where they spent long hours studying with popcorn and dried anchovies. Luckily, Grace, Martin and Spencer continued studying and playing video games together (respectively) through 4 years of UCLA. Spencer still lives in LA where he is a senior consultant for the Deloitte accounting firm. Spencer loves sleeping, riddles, scary movies and Chipotle.

Jon - also known as “Juanny” when in Argentina, Jon is the younger-and-much-taller brother of Grace. He is the local computer whiz, which is always a huge help to us. He spends most of his time becoming an expert in cars, computers, snakes, guns and brownies.

Grant - also had a radio show that came on directly after Martin’s and for whatever reason, that little sound-proof room was where another great friendship started. If you thought our save-the-date cards were awesome – that was Grant’s work. He is an independent designer in New York, having just graduated from Pratt University. For more of his talent, go to www.grantknapp.com. Grant’s talents go beyond design though, he brews beer, makes ice-cream and can dance to Michael Jackson like nobody's business... except for maybe Spencer.

Traveler's Information

We are so excited to know that so many friends and family are taking time to come and celebrate with us. We've been busy planning a weekend full of fun events. Most activities will be held in and around the Dana Point Harbor in California, near our hometown of San Clemente. Please feel free to browse the information below to help plan your visit.

Getting There & Away
The closest airport is John Wayne Airport (SNA), which has most major carriers, although Los Angeles (LAX) and San Diego (SAN) have been known to have lower fares. (*Airline tip straight from the source (Grace) - when you purchase your ticket, make sure you have an assigned seat, this is the only way to ensure you won't be bumped off of an oversold flight.) The train is also an option for in-state travelers, or those planning to see other cities in this great state!
